We talk a lot about self-awareness like it’s some magical trait that only CEOs, gurus, and monks have. Truth is, self-awareness is just knowing how you think, feel, and act, and why. It sounds simple, but most of us aren’t as self-aware as we believe.

In fact, studies say only about 10–15% of people are truly self-aware. Which means the rest of us… well, we might be lying to ourselves (unknowingly, of course).

But why does it matter?

Because self-awareness is the foundation of growth. If you don’t know your strengths, blind spots, or triggers, you’re basically walking through life with a foggy windshield. You can still move forward, but good luck avoiding those potholes.

So let’s make this practical. I created a quick Self-Awareness Test you can take right now. No complicated scoring, no psych degree needed. Just answer honestly.

The Self-Awareness Test

Rate each statement from 1 (Never) to 5 (Always):

  1. I can explain why I reacted the way I did in a recent conflict.
  2. I know what situations make me anxious, and why.
  3. I regularly ask for feedback from others (and actually listen).
  4. When someone criticizes me, I try to understand before defending myself.
  5. I’m aware of how my mood impacts the people around me.
  6. I know my top three strengths, and my top three weaknesses.
  7. I reflect on my decisions to understand what worked and what didn’t.
  8. I can admit when I’m wrong without blaming external factors.
  9. I notice patterns in my behavior over time (good or bad).
  10. I can clearly state what motivates me, and what drains me.

Scoring

  • 40–50 points: Congrats, Jedi Master. You’re highly self-aware (and probably still working on it, because that’s what self-aware people do).
  • 30–39 points: Solid. You’re on the right track but have room to grow. Focus on feedback and emotional triggers.
  • 20–29 points: You’re aware… sometimes. Start journaling and asking for honest input from trusted people.
  • Below 20: No judgment, but it’s time to get curious about yourself. Start small: reflect on one decision a day and ask, “Why did I do that?”

Final Thought

Self-awareness isn’t about perfection, it’s about observation. The more you understand yourself, the more control you have over your choices, relationships, and results.

So, how did you score? Drop it in the comments, or keep it to yourself (that’s self-awareness too 😉).
